Big Brew – 11 Days and Counting

Big Brew Day, homebrewing’s biggest event of the year, is coming up soon – May 2, Saturday to be exact. I have signed up everyone who contacted me about it, Joe has placed the order, and it looks like we have close to 20 batches of beer total.

You are encouraged to come and hang out, watch the brew, enjoy some beer, etc.

I have posted a link to PDF poster for the event on the website (www.paleales.org) if anyone wants to hang it up at work or in a receptive area.

RECIPE

This year we are doing a variation of a classic, but bigger Mild – Gale’s Mild Ale. Mild is a wonderful beer to drink in the summertime. This is an all-grain recipe. In the past, typically we have paired up an all grain brewer with an extract brewer. This has proven to be a fun and bonding experience, and it is cheaper as well.

For 5 gallons of all grain beer:

Ingredients will probably be in the $40-50 range approximately. Joe has not gotten a bill, so he cannot give me exact totals yet. I will send an email to participants, once I have a dollar figure. You should be prepared to pay for your ingredients that day – check or cash.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Plan to arrive early in order to start early. Everyone brews at their own pace, but you should plan on some set up time, and we will probably need some help weighing grain and hops, and setting up hoses/electricity.

The event is RAIN or SHINE. Keep that in mind and dress accordingly. If anyone has any portable awnings, they might come in h and y.

Likely, we will not be able to use Suydam’s restrooms as in the past. We are planning to rent a portable restroom for the event. Also, there are restrooms at the nearby Wawa.

FOOD

There is an Indo-Pak store with great snack foods for sale practically on the premises. If you plan to bring food and haven't told me, let me know. Grilled foods will work, as we will have a grill.  Crock pots may also be a possibility as we will have some electric capacity as well.

Some ideas:

*BREAKFASTY STUFF:

-bagels, cream cheese, butter
-donuts, pastries
-coffee

*LUNCH/DINNER STUFF

-salads
-grilled items (chicken, hot dogs, burgers, brats, pork loin, London broil)
-chips and dip (salsa, guacamole?)
-fruit salad or sliced
-cheese/cheese plate
-rolls
-carnitas, grilled steak/chicken

*MISC STUFF

-Desserts
-Water/Soda
-nuts, chips, pretzels
-Kegs/bottles of beer you want to share

Other Stuff to Bring

Keep in mind that we are brewing outdoors on grass. (Think picnic.)We will have access to a port-a-potty, and water, via hoses, as well as electricity.  Keep in mind you may want to bring tables, shelves, etc. to put brewing equipment on - especially if you need extra height. Just remember that you are taking your brew setup on the road, and won’t be able to run back home (easily) to get items.

Some suggested items to bring (not everyone needs to bring all of these, but if a few people do it will be helpful to all):

*Power Cords
*Hose splitters/Y connectors
*Hose nozzles
*Extra hoses
*BLOCKS TO PUT BURNERS UP ON (These will not be provided this year)
*Mini tables/shelves to put your brewing gear on
*Mats to put brewing gear on
*Chair to sit in
*Coolers (for beer/food)
*Water/water containers
*Sunscreen

Contact me if you have any questions – beerguru@trayner.net or 609-532-8328.

I will try to post details of on the event on the website as well.

FIRKIN TAVERN CELEBRATES FIFTH ANNIVERSARY

The Firkin Tavern is celebrating its fifth anniversary on Wed., April 29. Owner Bryan Leigel tells me that they are throwing a party with a firkin of Riverhorse on the bartop!  As Bryan puts it, it should be a fun time for any beer lovers.  The party starts around 5pm and they will have a bunch of prizes & giveaways as well.

The Firkin has been very supportive of our club and hosted a couple of great Brewer’s nights. Please come out and support the pub – it should be fun as well. Hope to see you there.

OTHER NEWS AND CORRECTIONS

It seems I had some old information in the last newsletter about the address for Princeton Homebrew and Dues.

Princeton Homebrew is located at 208 Sanhican Drive, Trenton, NJ 08618.

Dues are $30 per year per person, $45 for a family, and should be made out to PALE ALES.

Dues can be mailed to Treasurer Tony Abell :

77 N Clarke Ave

Somerville, NJ 08876-2750

Speaking of dues, before I forget, I’d like to welcome two new club members that I forgot to mention last time. Welcome Dawn Coluccio and Kathleen Saik.

Lastly, a recent correction that the Garden State Brewers 13th annual beer festival is on June 20th this year (The date was moved up from June 27th due to a conflict).

Also, elections should be held at our next meeting. Our meeting for April is looking like it will not happen at this point, so that will be May or June.
